What biostimulators are

Biostimulators are injectables that aim to prompt your skin's own collagen over the months after treatment, for gradual support and firmness.

We offer six. HArmonyCa combines hyaluronic acid, which gives some lift straight away, with calcium hydroxylapatite. Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, given as a series of injections over several months. Radiesse is calcium hydroxylapatite. PINKLLA is described as poly-L-lactic acid with polynucleotides; product details: TBC. Ellansé and Gouri are polycaprolactone (PCL).

One important difference from hyaluronic acid filler: calcium hydroxylapatite, in Radiesse and HArmonyCa, can't be dissolved. That makes a complication more complex to treat, and it's something we'll talk through with you before you decide. The same applies to polycaprolactone, in Ellansé and Gouri: the enzyme that dissolves HA filler works only on hyaluronic acid.

Who it’s for

Adults only

Treatment is only for adults aged 18 and over.

Often a good fit if you

  • have mild to moderate loss of firmness or volume in your face
  • want gradual, natural-looking support rather than a dramatic change
  • understand that calcium hydroxylapatite and polycaprolactone can't be dissolved

Not suitable, or we’ll wait, if you

  • are under 18
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have a skin infection, spots or a cold sore in the area
  • are allergic to any ingredient, including lidocaine, a local anaesthetic

If a filler or a skin booster would suit you better, we'll tell you at your consultation.

What happens on the day

  1. Step 1: Consultation and assessment

We look closely at your face, talk through what you'd like to change and go through your medical history, then suggest the product that suits you.

  2. Step 2: Preparing your skin

Your skin is cleansed and prepared.

  3. Step 3: The treatment

The product is injected in small amounts into the planned areas.

  4. Step 4: Straight afterwards

Some swelling, redness or bruising is normal. You'll get aftercare advice, including the warning signs to look out for.

Recovery and results

How many sessions you need depends on the product, the area and your skin. We'll plan yours at your consultation.

  1. Straight away

HArmonyCa and Radiesse give some lift straight away.

  2. The first 2 weeks

Redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising usually clear within 7 to 14 days.

  3. Over the following months

Results build as collagen forms. With HArmonyCa, the peak effect is at 3 to 6 months.

  4. Longer term

Results last from about 6 months to 3 years, depending on the product.

Aftercare

Please do

  • Contact us straight away if you have increasing pain, or skin that turns white, blue or dusky. If your vision changes, call 999 or go to A&E.
  • After Sculptra, gently massage the area for about 5 minutes several times a day for 1 to 2 weeks, if we advise you to.
  • Let any swelling settle before judging your result.
Please avoid
Avoid For
Strenuous exercise Until the next day
Sun, sunbeds and tanning While swelling settles

Risks and side effects

Common and expected
Redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising, usually clearing within 7 to 14 days.
Less common
Lumps or nodules under the skin. With calcium hydroxylapatite, side effects were reported in about 3 in 100 treatments, almost all of them nodules, and most weren't visible and settled on their own. Nodules can also follow poly-L-lactic acid, and lumps or hardening can follow polycaprolactone, mostly when it's placed too close to the surface.
Rare but serious
The product can block a blood vessel, which needs urgent expert treatment. Because calcium hydroxylapatite and polycaprolactone can't be dissolved, this is more complex to manage than with hyaluronic acid filler alone.

Your questions

What is a biostimulator?

An injectable that aims to support your skin's own collagen over the months after treatment.

How is it different from filler?

Hyaluronic acid filler adds volume straight away and can be dissolved. Biostimulators work more gradually, and calcium hydroxylapatite and polycaprolactone can't be dissolved.

How long do results last?

It depends on the product: about 6 months to 1 year for Radiesse, and 1 to 3 years for Sculptra. HArmonyCa results lasted up to about a year in studies, and Ellansé M is designed to last about 2 years.

Which one is right for me?

It depends on your face, your skin and what you'd like to change. We'll recommend one at your consultation.

Do I need to massage the area afterwards?

After Sculptra, you may be advised to massage the area for about 5 minutes several times a day, for 1 to 2 weeks.

How many syringes or vials are included in the price?

We'll confirm the amount of product, your plan and your price at your consultation, before any treatment.
