What electrolysis is
Electrolysis treats each hair on its own. A very fine probe is placed into the hair follicle, and a small electrical current damages the follicle so the hair can't grow back.
Hair grows in cycles, and not every follicle is growing at the same time, so you'll need several sessions to treat them all.
The American Academy of Dermatology says electrolysis can remove hair permanently, with no maintenance needed once the hair has gone. It works on any hair colour, including the blonde, grey and red hairs that lasers can't treat.
Who it’s for
Adults only
Treatment is only for adults aged 18 and over.
Often a good fit if you
- want to treat small areas, such as the chin, upper lip or eyebrows
- have light, grey or red hairs that laser can't treat
- have hairs on your face, where laser hair removal isn't permanent for women
- have a few stray hairs left after laser hair removal
Not suitable, or we’ll wait, if you
- have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic device
- have a skin infection in the area
- have a history of keloid (raised, thickened) scars
- are pregnant, for some areas of the body
Not sure whether electrolysis or laser hair removal suits you better? We'll talk it through at your consultation.
Risks and side effects
- Common and expected
- A brief sting or feeling of heat at each treated hair. Some people find it uncomfortable.
- Less common
- Infection if equipment isn't sterile, and scarring or burns in inexperienced hands.
- Your skin tone
- People with deeper skin tones can develop raised scars called keloids after electrolysis. Please tell us if you've had keloid scars before.

Your questions
Is electrolysis permanent?
It can permanently remove the hairs it treats. You need a course, because hair grows in cycles.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the area and how many hairs there are. Usually it's a course of regular short sessions.
Does it work on grey or blonde hair?
Yes. Electrolysis doesn't rely on the colour of the hair, unlike laser.
Does it hurt?
Each treated hair may sting briefly, and some people find it uncomfortable. Tell us at any point if you're uncomfortable, and we'll pause.
How do I choose 15, 30 or 60 minutes?
It depends on the area and the number of hairs. We'll suggest the right length at your consultation.
