What lymphatic drainage is
Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialised, gentle type of massage, using light pressure and slow, regular movements. We'll explain how your session works at your consultation.
In healthcare, it's part of the treatment for lymphoedema, a long-term swelling that needs a specialist lymphoedema service. It has also been used after cosmetic surgery, with early signs that it may help swelling settle, though more research is needed.
There's little research in healthy people. In one small study it didn't change the look of cellulite. So we offer it as a relaxing treatment, or alongside body sculpting, and we don't claim it detoxes your body, reduces weight or fat, or smooths cellulite.
Who it’s for
Adults only
Treatment is only for adults aged 18 and over.
Often a good fit if you
- would like a gentle, relaxing body treatment
- are having a course of body sculpting and would like to add it
Not suitable, or we’ll wait, if you
- have lymphoedema: please see your GP or lymphoedema service, who can refer you to a specialist therapist
- have a skin infection such as cellulitis, or a heart condition
- have, or may have, a blood clot
- are having treatment for cancer, unless your cancer team agrees
- have kidney problems
If you have new or unexplained swelling, please see your GP first.

- A gentle treatment. Tell us straight away if anything feels uncomfortable.
- Who can't have it
- It isn't used with some medical conditions, such as heart problems or a skin infection, so we check your health first.

Your questions
Will it help me lose weight or detox?
No. We don't make claims about detox, weight, fat or cellulite. In one small study it didn't change the look of cellulite.
Can you treat lymphoedema?
No. Lymphoedema needs a specialist lymphoedema service. Your GP can refer you.
What does it feel like?
Gentle and rhythmic, with light pressure and slow movements.
