What under-eye treatments are

Tired-looking eyes can have several causes: hollows where volume has been lost, thin or crepey skin, dark circles or puffiness. Different treatments suit different causes, so we start by looking at yours.

Tear trough filler is a hyaluronic acid filler placed to soften hollows under the eyes, and you see the change straight away. Skin boosters and polynucleotides don't add volume. They aim to improve the look of thin, crepey skin, gradually, over a course.

The evidence for skin boosters and polynucleotides around the eyes is early: most studies are small and short. We'll explain what each option can and can't do for you.

Who it’s for

Adults only

Treatment is only for adults aged 18 and over.

Often a good fit if you

  • have hollows under your eyes, with little or no puffiness (filler)
  • feel the skin under your eyes looks thin, crepey or tired (skin boosters and polynucleotides)
  • want a subtle, natural-looking change

Not suitable, or we’ll wait, if you

  • are under 18
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have an infection, a cold sore or inflammation near your eyes
  • are allergic to any ingredient, including lidocaine, a local anaesthetic

Filler isn't a good choice for large eye bags or loose, crepey skin. If surgery or another treatment would suit you better, we'll tell you.

What happens on the day

  1. Step 1: Consultation and assessment

We look closely at the area under your eyes, talk through what bothers you and go through your medical history, then suggest the option that fits the cause.

  2. Step 2: Preparing your skin

Your skin is cleansed and prepared.

  3. Step 3: The treatment

The product is injected in small amounts under the eye.

  4. Step 4: Straight afterwards

Some redness, swelling or bruising is normal. You'll get aftercare advice, including the warning signs to look out for.

Recovery and results

We'll plan your course at your consultation.

  1. Straight away

    Filler softens hollows straight away.

  2. The first 2 weeks

Redness, swelling and bruising tend to clear within 7 to 14 days.

  3. Over a course

Skin boosters and polynucleotides work gradually, over weeks to months.

  4. Longer term

Under-eye filler usually lasts about 6 to 12 months. Boosters need maintenance sessions, and how often isn't well established.

Aftercare

Please do

  • Contact us straight away if you have increasing pain, or skin that turns white, blue or dusky. If your vision changes, call 999 or go to A&E.
  • Let any swelling settle before judging your result.
Please avoid
Avoid For
Strenuous exercise Until the next day
Sun, sunbeds and tanning While swelling settles
Rubbing the area As we advise

Risks and side effects

Common and expected
Redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising, usually clearing within 7 to 14 days.
Less common, with filler
Swelling of the lower eyelid or upper cheek that lasts longer, a bluish tinge if filler sits too close to the surface, or lumps. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed.
Rare but serious
Filler can block a blood vessel, which can affect your vision. This is rare, but it's why under-eye filler should only be given by a trained practitioner who can act straight away.
Skin boosters and polynucleotides
Mostly mild, short-lived redness, swelling and bruising. There's little long-term research on the eye area.

Your questions

Do I need filler or a skin booster?

Filler softens hollows. Skin boosters and polynucleotides aim to improve thin, crepey-looking skin and don't add volume. Some people have both. We'll suggest what fits at your consultation.

When will I see results?

With filler, straight away. With skin boosters and polynucleotides, gradually, over a course of sessions.

How long does under-eye filler last?

Usually about 6 to 12 months.

Can under-eye filler be dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

Will it get rid of eye bags?

No. Filler isn't suitable for large eye bags, and skin boosters don't remove them. If surgery or another treatment would suit you better, we'll tell you.

Can it help with dark circles?

Dark circles have several causes, and not all respond to injectables. In one small study of Sunekos 200, dark circles looked better after 3 sessions, but the study was short, had no comparison group and was funded by the maker. We'll be honest about what to expect.
