What a thread lift is

A thread lift uses fine threads, placed under the skin through a needle or cannula, to give a subtle lift. Threads with small barbs, or cogs, grip the tissue so it can be held in a lifted position.

Most of our options use PDO (polydioxanone) threads, which your body absorbs over about 6 to 8 months. APTOS and MINT are thread brands.

Our thread lifts are carried out by a doctor. The evidence is limited. Studies show an improvement straight after treatment, but most are small, and long-term results haven't been well studied. So we talk about a subtle, temporary change. A thread lift isn't a substitute for a surgical facelift.

Who it’s for

Adults only

Treatment is only for adults aged 18 and over.

Often a good fit if you

  • are noticing early, mild loss of firmness in your face or neck
  • want a subtle change, and understand it's temporary
  • are happy to talk through the limited evidence before you decide

Not suitable, or we’ll wait, if you

  • are under 18
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have an infection, spots or a cold sore in the area
  • have a bleeding disorder or take blood-thinning medicine
  • tend to form raised, thickened (keloid) scars

In the studies, people over 50 had more skin dimpling and infection after a thread lift. We'll talk through what that means for you at your consultation.

What happens on the day

  1. Step 1: Consultation and assessment

We look at your face, talk through what you'd like to change and go through your medical history. We'll explain which threads we'd suggest, and why.

  2. Step 2: Preparing the area

The area is cleansed, and the doctor numbs it with a local anaesthetic injection.

  3. Step 3: The treatment

The threads are placed under the skin through a fine needle or cannula, then positioned to give the lift we planned together.

  4. Step 4: Straight afterwards

Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common. You'll get aftercare advice, including the signs to look out for.

Recovery and results

  1. Straight away

You'll see a change straight after treatment.

  2. The first days

Swelling is the most common side effect, often with some bruising and tenderness.

  3. Over the following months

PDO threads are absorbed by your body over about 6 to 8 months.

  4. Longer term

How long the lift lasts isn't well established. In the studies, satisfaction fell over time: 98% straight after treatment, and 88% in the longer term.

Aftercare

Please do

Your questions

How long does a thread lift last?

It isn't well established. Studies show an improvement straight after treatment, but long-term results haven't been well studied, and some reviews found the lift lasted only a short time.

Is it the same as a facelift?

No. A thread lift gives a subtler change than surgery, and it's temporary. If you're hoping for a bigger change, we'll tell you honestly at your consultation.

Who carries out thread lifts?

A doctor. The doctor also gives the local anaesthetic that numbs the area before the threads are placed.

Do the threads stay in?

PDO threads are absorbed by your body over about 6 to 8 months.

What are the side effects?

Swelling is the most common. Dimpling, numbness or tingling and threads you can see or feel are less common, and infection is rare.

Why do the prices say "from"?

The final price depends on your plan. We'll confirm your price at your consultation, before any treatment.
