What microneedling is

Microneedling uses a pen-like device with very fine needles to make thousands of tiny, controlled punctures in the surface of your skin. Your skin treats these as minor injuries and starts to repair itself, making new collagen as it heals.

Over a course of treatments, that renewal can soften the look of acne scars, refine uneven texture and tone, and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Dermatologists also use it for some types of scarring and stretch marks.

It's a gradual treatment. You won't walk out with a finished result. Instead, your skin keeps improving for months after each session as new collagen forms.

Who it’s for

Adults only

Treatment is only for adults aged 18 and over.

Often a good fit if you

  • have acne scarring and want a measured, step-by-step approach
  • feel your skin texture looks uneven, or your pores look more visible than you'd like
  • are starting to notice fine lines and want a natural-looking refresh
  • are happy to commit to a short course rather than a one-off visit

Not suitable, or we’ll wait, if you

  • have a history of keloid (raised, thickened) scars
  • have a weakened immune system
  • have taken isotretinoin, a prescription acne medicine, in the last month
  • have active breakouts, a cold sore or any skin infection in the area
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding

Not sure? That's what the consultation is for. If microneedling isn't the right choice for your skin, we'll tell you and suggest what might suit you better.

What happens on the day

  1. Step 1: Consultation and skin check

We talk through what you'd like to change, go through your medical history and look closely at your skin. For acne scarring, we look at the type of scars you have, because this affects how many sessions you're likely to need.

  2. Step 2: Preparing your skin

Your skin is cleansed, then a numbing cream is usually applied and left to work for a short time.

  3. Step 3: The treatment

The device is moved over your skin in small sections. A small area can take only a few minutes. A full face, or face and neck, takes longer.

  4. Step 4: Straight afterwards

Your skin will look pink and may feel warm and tight, rather like mild sunburn. You'll get aftercare advice for your treatment.

Recovery and results

For acne scars, a course of 3 to 5 sessions, spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart, is typical. We'll suggest a plan for your skin at your consultation.

  1. The first 2 days

Redness and a sunburn-like feeling are normal.

  2. Within a week

Redness usually settles within a few days to about a week.

  3. After a few weeks

You may start to see an improvement in texture and tone.

  4. Over several months

Results keep building as new collagen forms. Full results usually take several months.

  5. Longer term

Your skin naturally loses collagen over time, so results slowly fade. Daily sun protection, not smoking and a maintenance session about once a year help them last.

Aftercare

Please do

  • Protect your skin with a broad-spectrum sun cream every day, and keep out of strong sun while it heals.
  • Keep your skincare simple and gentle for the first few days.
  • Get in touch if redness lasts longer than a week, or if your skin becomes increasingly sore, hot or swollen.
Please avoid
Avoid For
Make-up As we advise
Retinol, acids and exfoliating products As we advise
Saunas, steam rooms, swimming and hard exercise As we advise
Picking or scratching your skin While it heals

Risks and side effects

Common and expected
Redness, warmth and a tight, sunburn-like feeling for a few days, settling within about a week.
Less common
Infection and scarring are possible with any treatment that breaks the skin. This is why microneedling should only be done by a trained practitioner in a clean clinical setting, and why we don't recommend at-home devices that pierce the skin.
Your skin tone
At your consultation we'll ask about your skin's history, including any dark or light patches after past treatments or injuries, and take it into account in your plan.

Your questions

How many sessions will I need?

For acne scars, a course of 3 to 5 sessions, spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart, is typical. Your plan depends on your skin and the type of scarring.

When will I see results?

You may notice an improvement within a few weeks, but full results usually take several months as new collagen builds.

How much downtime is there?

Expect redness, a bit like mild sunburn, for a few days. It usually settles within a week.

Does it hurt?

A numbing cream is usually applied first to make treatment more comfortable. Tell us at any point if you're uncomfortable, and we'll pause.

Can I have microneedling if I take acne tablets?

If you take isotretinoin, a prescription acne medicine, you'll need to wait at least one month after your last dose. Please tell us about any other medicines at your consultation.

How long do the results last?

Results fade gradually as your skin naturally loses collagen. Sun protection, not smoking and a yearly maintenance session help them last.

Is at-home microneedling the same?

No. At-home devices that pierce the skin can lead to infection or scarring, which is why dermatologists recommend professional treatment.
