What fat-dissolving injections are

Fat-dissolving injections, also called injection lipolysis, put a substance that breaks down fat cells into a small, localised area of fat. The body then clears the debris over the following weeks.

We use Aqualyx, a gel made in Italy that contains deoxycholate.

The evidence is limited. Most published studies of Aqualyx describe groups of people treated in clinics, without a comparison group, so they can't show how much difference a course makes. We'll talk you through what's realistic for your area at your consultation, and we can't promise a particular result.

Who it’s for

Adults only

Treatment is only for adults aged 18 and over.

Often a good fit if you

  • are near a healthy, stable weight
  • are bothered by a small, localised area of fat
  • understand it won't tighten loose skin

Not suitable, or we’ll wait, if you

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have a skin infection in the area
  • have loose skin in the area
  • take blood-thinning medicines or have a bleeding disorder
  • are allergic to any ingredient in the product

This isn't a weight-loss treatment. If weight is your main concern, your GP is a good place to start.

What happens on the day

  1. Step 1: Consultation and area check

We talk through what you'd like to change, go through your medical history and look closely at the area. We'll tell you honestly whether it suits this treatment, and what's realistic. We can't promise a particular result.

  2. Step 2: Marking and cleansing

The area to be treated is marked and your skin is cleansed.

  3. Step 3: The injections

Small amounts of Aqualyx are injected into the fat in the marked area. You'll feel the injections, and the area may be tender afterwards.

  4. Step 4: Straight afterwards

Swelling and redness are expected straight away. You'll get aftercare advice for your treatment, and we'll tell you who to call if you're worried.

Recovery and results

How many sessions you need depends on the area. In one small study, people had two sessions, 4 weeks apart. We'll suggest a plan at your consultation.

  1. The first few days

Swelling and redness in the treated area are expected, and usually settle in 3 to 5 days.

  2. After 3 to 7 days

About 1 in 5 people had itching that started in this window.

  3. Over the following weeks

The body clears the broken-down fat cells gradually. Bruising, which about 6 in 100 people had, settles in this time.

  4. Up to 4 months

Small lumps under the skin, which fewer than 2 in 100 people had, went within 4 months. An unusual feeling in the area, which about 1 in 8 had, lasted up to 2 months.

Risks and side effects

Common and expected
Swelling and redness in the treated area, usually settling in 3 to 5 days. In a study of 186 people, about 1 in 5 had itching that started 3 to 7 days after treatment, and about 6 in 100 had bruising.
Less common
An unusual feeling in the area, lasting up to 2 months (about 1 in 8 people), and small lumps under the skin that went within 4 months (fewer than 2 in 100).
Rare but serious
Infection, painful lumps and damage to the skin have been reported. In one case, the product had been injected too close to the surface by someone without the right training. Contact us straight away if the area becomes hot, very painful or swollen, or the skin changes colour.
