What laser hair removal is
A laser's light is absorbed by the pigment in your hair. The heat gradually damages the follicle, so hair grows back less, or not at all. We use a diode laser that combines four wavelengths of light, and its handpiece cools your skin as it works. It's a laser, not IPL (intense pulsed light).
Hair grows in cycles, so you'll need a course. Most people have 2 to 6 treatments, every 4 to 6 weeks. Regrowth tends to be finer, lighter and less noticeable, and most people stay hair-free for months or years, though maintenance sessions may be needed.
It works best on dark hair, because light-coloured hair has too little pigment for the laser to target. On a woman's face, results aren't permanent. For light or grey hairs, or the face, electrolysis may suit you better.
Who it’s for
Adults only
Treatment is only for adults aged 18 and over.
Often a good fit if you
- have dark hair you'd like to reduce
- get razor bumps or ingrown hairs from shaving
- are happy to commit to a course of sessions
Not suitable, or we’ll wait, if you
- have a tan: it needs to fade completely first
- have blonde, grey, white or red hair, which lasers can't target well
- have a cold sore or skin infection in the area
- take a medicine that makes your skin sensitive to light
- have a history of keloid (raised, thickened) scars
- are pregnant
Laser hair removal is now an option for many skin tones, but deeper skin tones need particular care and the right settings. We'll assess your skin and hair at your consultation.
What happens on the day
-
Step 1: Consultation and skin check
We look at your skin and hair, go through your medical history and check you haven't tanned recently.
-
Step 2: Preparing your skin
The area is cleansed. Numbing cream is optional, and takes 30 to 60 minutes to work. We'll tell you how to prepare the area before your first session.
-
Step 3: The treatment
Everyone in the room wears protective eyewear. Most people say the pulses feel like warm pinpricks, or a rubber band snapping against the skin.
-
Step 4: Straight afterwards
The area may look red and swollen, like mild sunburn. A cool compress can help. You'll get aftercare advice for your treatment.
Recovery and results
-
The first 1 to 3 days
Discomfort, redness and swelling, settling quickly.
-
After each session
A gradual reduction after each session, and regrowth that's often finer and lighter.
-
Over your course
2 to 6 sessions, usually every 4 to 6 weeks.
-
Longer term
Most people stay hair-free for months or years. Maintenance sessions may be needed, and results on a woman's face aren't permanent.
Aftercare
Please do
- Protect treated skin from direct sun.
- Use a cool compress if the area feels warm or swollen.
- Get in touch if you see blisters, or the skin becomes increasingly sore, hot or swollen.
| Avoid | For |
|---|---|
| Sunbeds, sun lamps and tanning | Throughout your course |
| Waxing, plucking and threading | As we advise |
| Hot baths, saunas and hard exercise | As we advise |
Risks and side effects
- Common and expected
- Discomfort, swelling and redness for 1 to 3 days.
- Less common
- Blistering, a cold sore flare-up or infection. These are rare in experienced hands.
- Rare but serious
- Burns, scarring, and lightening or darkening of the skin. Colour changes often fade, but some are permanent.
- Your skin tone
- In deeper skin tones, the extra pigment in the skin absorbs some of the laser's energy, which raises the risk of dark or light patches, blisters and scarring. The right laser, settings and sun protection reduce this.

Your questions
How many sessions will I need?
Usually 2 to 6, every 4 to 6 weeks. It depends on the area, your hair and your skin.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
It gives a long-term reduction for most people, often with finer, lighter regrowth. Maintenance may be needed, and it isn't permanent on a woman's face.
Does it work on blonde, grey or red hair?
Usually not, because the laser needs pigment in the hair. Electrolysis can treat any hair colour.
Can I have it with a deeper skin tone?
Often yes, with the right laser and settings, and extra care.
Does it hurt?
Most people describe warm pinpricks or a rubber band snapping against the skin. Numbing cream is optional.
Can I have it if I've been in the sun?
A tan needs to fade completely before treatment.
How much does it cost?
Prices are by area or package, for one session or per session in a course of 6 or 8. Your consultation is free, and we'll confirm your plan and price before any treatment.
